SMILING through salad leaves in thousands of supermarkets through Australia is the face of the third generation of Houston family farmers.

Liam, 29, and his younger sister Rosie, 26, are not only the next generation of Houstons to be on the farm, but are also rapidly becoming the public face of Australia’s biggest salad lettuce producer, Houston’s Farm. They are the children of Anthony, one of the founding brothers of the business.

Liam, after extensive world travel and study, works as Houston’s Farm services technical officer, while Rosie, who graduated with Applied Bachelor of Agriculture from University of Tasmania, is an agronomist.

Both started at the bottom in the family business from cleaning, filling and packing salad bags.

“I always wanted to be involved with the farm,” Rosie said. “I love my job and proud of where this business has come from.”

Liam has been in charge of forecasting the amount of lettuce the farm needs to plant in order to meet market demand. He has a Bachelor of Agricultural Science and Business from UTAS.

“There is great opportunity and future this business and to continually improve its environmental footprint,” he said.

“It’s a lot of fun having our image on the salad packs in supermarkets, but when I first saw them it was actually embarrassing.”

The whole family including parents Anthony and Prue, feature on the salad bags.
