LOFTY changes are afoot for Hobart’s dining scene with a range of new eateries opening.
A new Asian-inspired restaurant on the top level of Brooke Street Pier boasts waterfront views and some of the most experienced staff in Hobart.
Aloft has started taking diners for a soft opening but will be taking public booking from November 3.
The five owners all have extensive hospitality backgrounds, including at venues such as Pilgrim cafe, MONA’s The Source and Garagistes.
Co-head chefs Glenn Byrnes and Christian Ryan have both worked at top restaurants around Australia and met when working together at Melbourne’s Taxi Dining Room.
“We’re taking inspiration from all the different areas of Asia and adding local ingredients that aren’t usually in that style of food, so putting a Tasmanian twist on it,” Mr Ryan said.
He said there was a focus on shared dishes.
Co-owner Will Priestly said that while the food would be gourmet, it was not a stuffy, high-end restaurant atmosphere.
“We have good produce and amazing chefs but be approachable, we don’t want to exclude people with price point.”
Initially, the restaurant will only open for dinners from Tuesday to Saturday.
Just up the road on Brooke St the Black Footed Pig has been opened by Daci & Daci Bakers owners Cheryl and Naser Daci.
Mrs Daci said the restaurant in the old City Flour Mill made use of the features of the historic building.
“Nasser used to have a couple of restaurants back home in Kosovo so we decided to do a tapas bar,” she said.
“We do tapas, small plates, large plates as well as nice wines and cocktails.
“It’s casual dining, nothing too formal and we encourage sharing.”
They do dinners Tuesday to Saturday as well as lunch on Friday and Saturday.
Other newly opened restaurants and cafes around Hobart include Honey Badger Dessert Cafe in Salamanca Square, CBD cafe Coterie & Co. in Liverpool St, and Templo restaurant has opened in Patrick St where Chulo used to be.
Chef Simon Davies from the new PerMission to Eat cafe in Barrack St is now doing gourmet degustation menu dinners once a month on a Friday.
Also, Patria Della Pasta is a new Italian/Australian restaurant recently opened in Sandy Bay where Bombay Curry used to be.
The owners of Smolt and Frank will soon open a restaurant in the old Hill St grocer site at West Hobart.
Also soon to open will be the former Garagistes site, which is being transformed into a modern Greek cafe and restaurant.
