BICYCLE Network Tasmania has welcomed news the Hobart City Council will spend $475,000 to widen Huon Rd to make it safer for cyclists.

The group is also pushing for the council to commit to a dedicated cycle network within the Hobart CBD.

The Huon Rd works are part of a number of city projects approved in an annual update of the council’s 10-year capital works program on Monday.

Bicycle Network Tasmania spokeswoman Alison Hetherington said she hoped the widening of Huon Rd included sealing the edges, which would provide more space for riding up Huon Rd in South Hobart.

“It will be more comfortable for the recreational cyclists because there are a few tight corners,” she said.

“Cars can come up right behind you and not easily see you.

“Local commuters using bikes for transport will use Strickland Ave because it is quieter.”

The council was on Tuesday unable to provide details of the Huon Rd works.

Ms Hetherington said a core network of cycleways within the Hobart CBD would encourage a large portion of the population who are open to riding for transport but want to be separated from motor traffic.

“At the moment we have good cycling infrastructure like the intercity cycleway and the rivulet path, which both stop at the edge of the city centre,” she said.

“We think for more people to ride we need to have paths connecting east to west and north to south.”

One of the key elements of the council’s Draft Hobart Transport Strategy released last year was to develop a detailed bicycle plan to expand and promote bicycle riding within Hobart.

The strategy went out for public consultation last year and a final report will be provided to the council this year.

Other capital works include $5.6 million for a major refurbishment of the Doone Kennedy Hobart Aquatic Centre including a new two-storey entry building, a new staircase and a lift to accommodate stretchers, large wheelchairs and prams, a new indoor/outdoor cafe, and new gym changerooms on the first floor

The aquatic centre redevelopment will cost $22 million and while the council will fund $12 million, it has been unsuccessful in its two funding applications to the Federal Government for the remaining $10 million.

Works such as increased CCTV coverage and a new waterslide, accessible warm water pool, wellness sauna, steam room area and new first aid room will have to wait until funding is received.
