THE state’s best working dogs will be putting their skills on show this week as the Tasmanian Working Sheep Dog State Championships gets underway at Campbell Town.

The championships kick off on Friday and 50 dogs have registered in the open class to vie for the chance to be named State Champion.

President of the Tasmanian Working Sheepdog Association Lee Jamieson said the event provided a great opportunity for Tasmanians to explore their own backyard and make their way to Campbell Town to witness incredible dog skills.

“Competitors will converge on Campbell Town from all over the state and the standard is expected to be high,” Mr Jamieson said.

“However, recent form really means very little, it always depends on the three sheep you draw on the day and how well you and your dog can handle them.

“Realistically there are at least 10 different combinations of dogs and handlers who could take out this year’s open class, and there’s plenty of healthy rivalry amongst competitors vying for the win.”

Working dog competitions are becoming more popular with a jump in the number of new competitors since the start of the season.

“If there is one positive to come out of the COVID -19 for us, it is that our competition is growing and there is plenty of opportunity for new participants to have a go,” Mr Jamieson said.

“The only disappointing thing for us this weekend is that we were due to be hosting the Supreme Australian Sheepdog Championship and Australia versus New Zealand in the Trans Tasman events but like so many events this year it has been postponed until 2021.”

The local championship is a free event and spectators are welcome.

Competition will start at 10am on Friday morning with the novice and encourage events.

The open and improver events will start on Saturday with Sunday being the big day when one canine will emerge as top dog.
