THE Royal Hobart Show may be cancelled this year, but punters can still get their gee-whizzer, dagwood dog and sideshow alley fix at a new showgrounds event kicking off Thursday.
Showmen’s Guild of Tasmania have decided to dust off their side show equipment, creating their very own Hobart Mega Carnival for the October long weekend.
Organiser Nicole Welch said the effort was as much a mood booster for the public as it was for struggling operators.
The Hobart Mega Carnival will provide showbags and amusement rides for kids and adults including the hurricane and the humble jumping castle.
While the usual Royal Hobart Show petting zoo will not make an appearance, Ms Welch said locals could look forward to classic show grub like tornado potatoes and fairy floss.
“We’re hoping it’s going to be great,” she said.
Tickets priced at only $2.50 will cover the ground rates and the online ticketing system will include tracking and tracing for COVID safety.
“It’s going to be a little bit different because the amusement rides are going to be spread out in a large area with lots of ground markings and less people than a normal big event,” Ms Welch said.
People of all ages can purchase event tickets via the Hobart Mega Carnival Facebook page.
The carnival will run in three hour morning, afternoon and evening sessions from Thursday to Sunday October 22-25 at Hobart Showground, with extra sessions recently added due to popular demand.
