Mona Foma is back, and artistic director Brian Ritchie reckons if you can’t find something interesting in this summer’s jam-packed line-up, you might actually be dead.
Released online on Thursday morning on the Mona Foma website, the full program for the festival’s 16th edition features over 500 performers and artists – including Japanese three-piece Shonen Knife, Tasmanian product Courtney Barnett, and Australian music legend Paul Kelly.
In between will be a free concert at Launceston’s Cataract Gorge featuring reclusive alternative rockers TISM, live music and cinematic visuals broadcast from the deck of a 70-tonne sailing ship moored on Hobart’s waterfront, an immersive exhibition featuring African-inspired food and gin, and a first-ever live Australian performance by artist Yahon Chang.
Revealing the program after last month’s early announcement that Queens of the Stone Age will rock MONA lawns on 16 February, Ritchie said Mona Foma 2024 promised unpredictable art, world premieres, and some unexpected venues.
The festival will run from 15 February to 2 March 2024, across two cities and over three weekends.
Ritchie described TISM playing at the Gorge as “a once in a lifetime thing”.
“It’s a free concert as well, so we anticipate a lot of excitement and fun to be had there.
“And there are other good bands on the bill, including Cash Savage and The Last Drinks, Mulga Bore Hard Rock who are an Aboriginal band chosen by KISS to open their tour, and the all-female improvising music collective FFLORA.
“This summer is a very ambitious program and we are trying to sell a lot of tickets, so I hope that we get the support from Tasmanians and those on the mainland.”
Mona Foma is in nipaluna/Hobart from 15–25 February, and in Northern Tasmania from 29 February to 3 March.
Tickets are available from 10am on Tuesday 21 November.
