Dan Camac breaks world record for fastest marathon time wearing Crocs at the Cadbury Marathon

This year’s Cadbury Marathon featured a man who broke an unusual world record. The event was also the biggest yet, with around 1900 participants.

Running a marathon is hard enough, but doing it wearing Crocs is even more challenging.

Dan Camac not only completed the Cadbury Marathon in Crocs but also beat a world record.

With a time of 2 hours and 49 minutes, Camac holds the unofficial world record for the fastest time running a marathon wearing Crocs.

The record is not official yet as it has not been ratified.

Camac wanted to run the marathon wearing Crocs for a fun challenge.

“I was having a look at the different marathon records to break — and I saw the crocs one — and I thought ‘I reckon I could do that’,” he said.

“For the first 5kms, I was like ‘these are just as good as any normal running shoe’ — and then I started getting a little bit sore.

“Probably about 30kms in, the calves and the feet were aching pretty bad.

“I kept looking down at my watch, seeing the pace slip — I knew what pace I had to hold — but I managed to hold on and break it by about two minutes.”

Around 1900 runners took part in the Cadbury Marathon across multiple events.

Fraser Darcy won the marathon.

“I enjoyed the course and the support out there,” Darcy said.

“Looking at Mount Wellington, the Cadbury Factory and the bridges where you run along, it’s pretty cool.”

Despite being his inaugural Cadbury Marathon, Darcy said he came down expecting to win the event.

“You never know who’s gonna rock up at these events, but judging by the past results and where I sit, I knew I’d be competitive.

“And it was a really good race to start with; there were more people in the front pack than I thought there would be, which is great for marathon racing - it’s very exciting.

“And then, as the race progressed, people kept dropping off, and the last man standing was me.”

Two years ago, Richie Egan won the Cadbury Marathon.

However, this year, he decided to run the half-marathon and was the first to cross the finish line.

Egan said he enjoyed taking part in the event.

“The organisers are great and super friendly; Blake Steele and his team do a fantastic job. It’s at a good time of year if you want to train over Christmas as well.”

Mr Steele, the CEO of Athletics Tasmania, said the Cadbury Marathon was an event for everyone.

“It’s probably a little less intimidating. It’s not as elite, so it’s very much a community event,” he said.

“You’ve got people who are running for New Year’s resolutions, and then you’ve got elite runners that are trying to win.”

But we’re just thrilled to be able to put on an event good enough for some of the top runners in Australia.”
