A crowd of thousands marched from Salamanca to Dark Park last night to watch this year’s ogoh ogoh effigy — a giant Tasmanian cave spider named Bella — go up in flames, officially marking the end of a festival that has won praise from admirers but also sparked debate over some of the religious imagery used.

Dark Mofo transforms Hobart

At least 15,000 visitors came from interstate and overseas for Dark Mofo 2018 — up from 11,000 last year — joining tens of thousands of Tasmanians attending a diverse festival that included everything from concerts by international music acts like St Vincent and Electric Wizard to stunning laser installations at Dark Park and performance artist Mike Parr spending three days buried underneath Hobart’s busiest street.

A record 1537 brave — or crazy — people took part in last week’s annual Nude Solstice Swim and the City of Hobart Winter Feast again attracted huge crowds.

The Hobart City Council’s ongoing sponsorship of the Winter Feast was last week called into question by Lord Mayor Ron Christie, who said that this year’s Dark Mofo had crossed the line and was no longer family friendly.

The inverted crosses sparked anger from some Christian groups, with an online petition — now with nearly 19,000 signatures — calling for their immediate removal.

A rival petition, calling for Dark Mofo to continue uncensored, has now attracted more than 8000 signatures.
