Early morning shoppers were confronted with a flood of broken glass lining the walkway of a Toowoomba shopping centre after thieves smashed their way into the businesses and stole sums of money from cash registers and safes.
A number of food and retail shopfronts outside Northpoint Shopping Centre were forced into by unknown persons sometime after 4am.
One shop owner said they were shocked by Thursday morning’s events and held concern over the safety of their staff who work late night shifts.
The shop owner confirmed the offenders had taken off with a sum of cash from the register and had made an unsuccessful attempt to break open their safe.
It’s believed the unknown persons used a sledgehammer to break through the glass doors and gain entry.
Store and shopping centre staff worked quickly to clean up the destruction left behind, with many already in the process of having their glass replaced.
A Queensland Police spokesman confirmed a report came in at around 4.30am and initial reports suggested three unknown offenders were involved.
The QPS spokesman said forensics are working to determine whether possible fingerprinting can be identified.
Investigations remain ongoing.
