Police probe serious single-vehicle crash

Police have charged a young man with more than a dozen drug, traffic and weapon offences after he crashed into a traffic pole with enough force to snap it.

Joseph Alister Facer is facing the prospect of a long time behind bars after he crashed into a traffic pole while allegedly in possession of a cache of drugs and a firearm.

Residents living along Tor Street woke to the sound of a loud crash and multiple emergency sirens after the man hit the power pole at the intersection with Tancred Ave about 3.25am on Tuesday, snapping it at the base before crashing through a fence.

Despite the high-speed collision Facer walked away with little more than a minor shoulder injury.

Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics transported him to the Toowoomba Hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

Police seized several items of interest at the scene, allegedly including a firearm and a range of drugs

Facer was held in police custody on Tuesday night and had his matter briefly mentioned in Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

He is charged with four counts of possessing dangerous drugs and one count each of burglary and commit indictable offence, unlawful use of motor vehicle, driving without a driver's licence, driving without due care and attention, unlawful possession of a weapon, authority required to possess explosives, possess drug utensils, offence to buy or possess S4 or S8 medicines, possess property suspected of having been used in connection with the commission of a drug offence.

Duty solicitor Phil Stainton told the court Facer remained in Toowoomba Hospital and was expected to be there for three or four days.

He asked that the case be adjourned to Friday when an update on his condition would be placed before the court.

Magistrate Louise Shephard remanded Facer in custody and adjourned his matters for mention back in Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Friday, August 26.

Neighbours reported hearing a large crash and woke to see sparks flying.

Royce Thornton lives nearby and said he saw the power pole had snapped about a metre above the ground, leaving a red SUV with extensive damage.

“He hit it hard and a little while afterwards the police and ambulance arrived,” he said.

“After the man had been taken away in the ambulance a police car arrived and I saw the officer take a firearm and a backpack from the car,” he said.

The crash cut power to several homes in the area and it remained cut until Ergon Energy linesmen replaced the pole shortly before 10am.

Traffic diversions were in place slowing traffic along Tor Street.
