The Toowoomba Mountaineers women’s QSL Youth League side were unable to continue their perfect start to the season as they suffered a 68-58 defeat to the Ipswich Force on Saturday.
Check out our key takeaways from the contest here.
Stars shine
Halle Shipton and Laura Conway have proven themselves as key members of both the youth league side and the senior Mountaineers this season and the duo led the scoring in round 3.
Shipton scored 16 points, while Conway also chipped in with a solid 13 points.
Impressively, Shipton also scored eight points and grabbed nine rebounds for the QSL open women’s side in a busy weekend for the young star.
Force bounce back from slow start
The Mountaineers hit the floor running as they scored the first four points of the game and took an early 11-4 lead.
However, the hosts soon found their feet and went on a 17-6 run to take a four-point lead early in the second quarter.
From there, Ipswich rarely looked back as it led at halftime (37-33) and three-quarter time (52-45) before holding out for a solid 10-point win.
Ipswich’s clutch finish
After heading into the final quarter with a seven-point lead, Ipswich’s advantage was reduced to just three points at the midway point in the quarter with the scores 57-54.
However, it was the Force who rose to another level when the heat was on as they went on an 11-4 run in the final five minutes of the clash to run away with the win.
Battle of the duos
Where the Mountaineers had Conway and Shipton, the Force had an impressive duo to counter in Aaliyah Sanggaran and Allazae Duncan-Semau.
All four players traded blow-for-blow as they each scored at least six field goals with the Mountaineers duo combining for 29 points, while the Ipswich pair combined for 35 points.
