An understrength Toowoomba Mountaineers women’s side suffered their second loss of the season on Saturday night as they were defeated 84-62 by the Brisbane Capitals.

After a disappointing result for the Mountaineers, we reveal the biggest talking point form the contest.

Mountaineers without key players

Making the trip to take on Brisbane Capitals was always going to be a challenging proposition but it was made all the more difficult with the likes of Kirby Harley and Mia Stower both out.

Stower has been the focal point of Toowoomba’s offence and defence and recorded back-to-back double-doubles in their opening two games

Harley has also made some handy contributions with 13 points across the two games she played.

Stower’s absence was particularly felt in the rebounding department as they lost the rebounding battle for the first time this season and also recorded less than 20 offensive rebounds for the first time.

Third quarter blitz shocks Mountaineers

Despite being without key players, the Mountaineers held their own in the first half and were well and truly in the contest at half time, as they trailed by just two points at the break.

However, that all changed in the third term as the hosts came out firing on all cylinders.

The Capitals scored 34 points in the quarter and held the Mountaineers to just 13 as they stormed out to a 23-point lead at three-quarter time.

From there, the game was well and truly over as Brisbane cruised to victory in the final quarter.

Struggles from deep

It has been a difficult start to the campaign in terms of shooting from the Mountaineers and that was at the forefront on Saturday where they failed to score a bucket from beyond the arc.

After shooting 0 from 14 in round 3, Toowoomba has now scored just three three-pointers from 43 attempts at 6.98 per cent accuracy to start the season.

Meanwhile, their opponents have scored a combined 18 threes from 59 attempts at 32.2 per cent.

The Mountaineers will look to turn around their shooting woes when they return to the court this Saturday to take on the South West Metro Pirates at Hibiscus Stadium in a crucial early season clash.
