The Western Clydesdales announced their first BMD Premiership player just minutes after the QRL announced the club would feature in the elite women’s competition next year.

Newtown Lions young gun Paige Edwards is the club’s first signing.

Proving her versatility Edwards played in a number of roles for the Lions who lost to rivals Gatton Hawks in the TRL Women’s grand final.

Clydesdales CEO Shane Sullivan said the club’s primary goal was to provide a pathway to elite rugby league for the South West Queensland region’s female players and Edwards’ signing is proof of that.

Sullivan however did also say the Clydesdales had approached a number of players including several with BMD Premiership and NRLW experience.

“It’s certainly an aim of ours to bring back the players who are from the region who have gone on to bigger and better things,” Sullivan said.

“We will have a young side but there is plenty of talent playing in Toowoomba Rugby League.

“If we can supplement that with some of the girls coming back and providing a leadership role then that is certainly what we are looking forward to.

“We are talking with a few of them now.”
