The Toowoomba Mountaineers QSL men’s side picked up their first loss of the 2024 season when they fell to the Brisbane Capitals 107-76 on Saturday night.

After a disappointing result for the Mountaineers, we reveal the key talking points from the contest.

Capitals run away in final quarter

Despite winning each of the first three quarters, Brisbane had done far from enough to seal the win as it only held an eight-point lead headed into the final 10 minutes.

After the Mountaineers pulled off a stunning comeback in round 1 to steal the win from the grasps of defeat against the USC Ripcity, they would have well and truly believed they had what it takes to claim the win headed into the final quarter.

However, the Capitals came out firing in the final term to and quickly dashed any hopes of a late comeback as they won the quarter 35-12 and sealed a stunning 31-point win.

Captain fights till the end

Toowoomba captain Adam Gehrig continued his impressive start to the season as he led the scoring for the Mountaineers with 23 points.

The 2023 QSL MVP was automatic from the line as he nailed a perfect nine from nine free throw attempts.

Gehrig currently leads the competition in scoring with an impressive 23.33 points per game.

Brisbane dominates the boards

The Capitals dominated the rebounding battle on both the offensive and defensive end to help them create several second chance opportunities.

Brisbane recorded 21 offensive rebounds and 57 in total, while the Mountaineers could only muster 37 rebounds with seven on the offensive end.

Both sides make several trips to the line

In such a high scoring contest, it is no surprise that both sides found ways to draw fouls.

In total, there was a stunning 80 free throw attempts, with the Mountaineers making 26 from 35 and the Capitals making 33 from 45.

Solid performance from big man

While he may have only played 20 minutes, Patrick Roche put in a solid performance as he scored 12 points, grabbed seven rebounds and recorded three steals.

He also had a solid plus/minus of only -3, with only Bailey Nwanevu (-1) recording better for the Mountaineers.
