Toowoomba’s only remaining baseball club has put out the SOS in a desperate bid for players to keep the club alive.
The club, which has been a stalwart of the Garden City’s sporting scene for the past 50 years, is calling out for juniors in order for their survival.
In an effort to draw more players to the club, they’ve decided to ramp up their recruiting efforts with T-ball clinics and a come trial this weekend.
“We need the juniors to keep the seniors alive,” Rangers’ president Seve Metzroth said.
“It has been five years since we’ve had a competitive (little league) side at the club, and we didn’t even have a junior program at all last season.”
The president said that juniors haven’t been not the only ones affected by low numbers.
“We’ve also had dwindling numbers not just in juniors but seniors too,” he said.
“There were only 21 players signed up last season.
“So, we’ve started running T-ball clinics for grades 1-3 at local primary schools to try and get more interest in the sport.”
Metzroth would like to have enough numbers in the future, allowing for Toowoomba to have its own league.
“We want to emulate the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast and have our own league,” he said.
“This would rule out all the travel that the juniors would have to do by going to Brisbane each week.”
The Rangers will be hosting a ‘Come and Try Day’ this Sunday, August 13 from 9am to noon at Commonwealth Oval.
Being free to attend, the club will also be providing baseball equipment and gear to those who come along.
