Vintage lover revives flattering, comfortable, stylish fashion trend

Comfortable yet stylish clothing that fits in all the right places is not easy to find, but one fashion lover has an “overall” solution.

When Emma Carland, 18, was a young child, she spent many days learning to sew with her mum and grandmother – memories she looks back on fondly.

Now, the former Spotlight retail worker has started business So Many Pockets and sells handmade overalls in funky patterns and flattering fits.

“I made my first pair of overalls when I was about nine or 10,” Ms Carland said.

“It doesn’t even feel like work because I get to sew, which I love … it’s a combination of doing something with my hands and problem solving.”

The first-year university student who is studying mechanical engineering said she planned to run the new business as long as she could.

Selling her heavyweight cotton overalls at the Toowoomba Farmers’ Markets most Saturdays, the vintage fashion enthusiast said the most popular or unique prints included cactuses, beetroot and florals.

“I love going to the markets because I get to chat to all the customers and it doesn’t matter what age you are – everyone loves overalls,” Ms Carland said.

“So many older ladies get so excited when they see them and tell me about how they had overalls just like these or wore them when they were pregnant.”

Items can be purchased off the rack or through custom orders.
