The Darling Downs’ top tourism body plans to leverage interest in the upcoming Toowoomba NRL match to draw more people to September’s Carnival of Flowers.
Southern Queensland Country Tourism CEO Peter Homan said this Sunday’s clash between the St George Illawarra Dragons and the Sydney Roosters presented the region with plenty of opportunities for future economic development.
Mr Homan said he was hoping to develop digital packages with the NRL for tourists going to the game who might also wish to return to the city’s premier event in a few weeks.
“It will be about getting the people coming from Maranoa, the South Burnett, mostly from regional areas,” he said.
“We’ve looked as some packages the NRL have, and that’s where we’re looking at playing at for Sunday.
“We’ve spoken to the NRL about what packages we’re doing.”
Mr Homan said the game needed to be used as a launch pad for future tourism opportunities, like an annual NRL match and a chance to host events at the 2032 Olympics.
