A calf strain to Cory Paix has opened the door for Toowoomba born teammate Tyson Smoothy in the battle for the Broncos no. 9 jumper.
Paix didn’t play a single minute of NRL footy last year but his pre-season efforts still caught the eye of new Broncos coach Michael Maguire.
Unfortunately the Toowoomba junior will not get the chance to truly impress Maguire this weekend with the hooker ruled out of Sunday’s trial game against the Gold Coast Titans.
The Broncos will also be without star playmaker Adam Reynolds who is being eased back into play after off-season surgery.
Sunday’s trial will still be a blockbuster though with some star names in action
The full house sign is expected to go up at Toowoomba Sports Ground on Sunday with less than 1200 tickets still available and selling fast.
It will be the first time Toowoomba has hosted NRL teams since the St George Illawarra Dragons played the Sydney Roosters when the game was forced to relocate to Queensland due to Covid lockdowns in 2021.
The Broncos-Titans trial at 2.30pm on Sunday will be the cherry on top of what is massive weekend of football.
“It’s a fantastic chance to showcase everything that is great about rugby league,” Western Clydesdales CEO Shane Clydesdales said.
“We’re really looking forward to what we think will be an amazing weekend for rugby league fans.
“It’s a great opportunity for our junior and senior players and club staff to showcase their skills and naturally we have the Broncos and Titans as well.”
The Western Clydesdales will kick-off proceedings on Friday with Valentine’s in the Saddle featuring special guests Red Hill’s captain Adam Reynolds, Origin legend Ben Hunt and new Broncos coach Michael Maguire as well as NRLW superstars Shenae Ciesiolka and Jada Ferguson.
On Saturday the Broncos will conduct a captain’s run and fan signing session.
With Western Clydesdales City versus Country junior and Hostplus Cup senior matches early Sunday fans are urged to arrive early and enjoy a full day of footy on Sunday.
