A MAN has been charged and fined following an incident at a Toowoomba shopping centre, where he followed a woman into a bathroom.

The matter occurred on Thursday at Grand Central Shopping Centre, when the woman was walking to the staff bathrooms on level two of the centre.

Social media reports said the woman opened the cubicle door to find the man standing outside, who promptly asked her where the bus stop was.

She was believed to have been "shaken" by the incident but was unharmed.

Police media confirmed an 18-year-old man was arrested and charged on five breach of bail offences, which were unrelated to the incident.

The woman did not elect to press charges.

He appeared in the Toowoomba Magistrate's Court yesterday and was fined $500.

The man was also banned from entering the centre for six months.

A spokeswoman for Grand Central said security were notified and reported the matter to the police.

"The safety of our customers and retail staff is our number one priority, and we thoroughly investigate every matter that is brought to our attention," she said.

"We acted swiftly and decisively with regard to this, and as the matter is now with police, and out of respect for the retail team member involved, we are unable to provide any further detail."
