Gardening has always been a part of the Weatherbys’ lives and this year they’re getting in early, having already nominated their luscious, eclectic garden in The Chronicle Garden Competition.

A Harristown local all his life, Ian Weatherby said the couple had decided to enter their garden into the annual competition for the first time in 2018 after encouragement from friends and family.

“We just like spending a lot of our time outside, having a cuppa or a glass of wine out on our back patio or the front courtyard,” he said.

“It’s nice to be able to enjoy the space we’ve worked hard to create over the years together.

“Everyone has always told us we should enter the garden competition, so when we did in 2018 it was wonderful to win the first time entrants category.”

The Weatherbys have won various categories in previous Chronicle Garden Competitions.

Maria Weatherby said for her, the garden had become a little getaway.

“It’s our haven, we just love being out here and it’s nice to be able to share it with the rest of the community and visitors during the carnival,” she said.

“In 2019, we won the courtyard category, but in 2020 we didn’t enter the online competition so it’s wonderful to be back this year.”

Garden for Good

Mrs Weatherby said her annuals were all ready and in the ground, and was anticipating them to make a real splash come September.

“Some of the violets and pansies are already rearing their heads, so by the time the Carnival arrives our garden should be full of bursts of colour.”

There’s still plenty of time to enter the 2021 Chronicle Garden Competition with entries open until Friday, August 13.

Entry details and forms are available here.
