With entries now open for The Chronicle Garden Competition 2021, entrant liaison Mike Wells wants to urge all gardeners to flex their green thumbs and get involved this year.

“There’s still a category for every size and type of garden and experience level,” Mr Wells said.

“A new category I’ve helped introduce is the footpath garden section, which is something I’m very passionate about and hope to see plenty of Toowoomba homes incorporate.”

Mr Wells explained the footpath garden only needed to be 50cm wide from the start of your front yard’s boundary fence.

“It’s going to be a great way for everyone to add some colour to the city in time for carnival,” he said.

“I’m keen to see local gardeners help bring back the garden city mantle this year, so I urge everyone to get on board and get their footpath garden ready.”

As for additional gardening advice Mr Wells said he couldn’t stress enough the importance of regular mulching and getting your soil in excellent condition.

“If you’re soil is up to scratch you’re going to get so much more out of your garden,” he said.

“Plus the more you mulch, the less you have to water which is important coming into a garden competition when we do have water restrictions in place.”

Entry forms for this year’s competition can be found in the The Chronicle throughout June including June 2, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 10 with entries open until August 13.
