A man stabbed his brother with a hunting knife, tried to strangle him three times, and ripped hair out of his mother’s scalp before pleading with stunned bystanders to “kill me” in a horrific attack at Elizabeth Park, court documents allege.

On Wednesday, Kane Gregory Robin Swift, 35, appeared via video link in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court charged with attempted murder and commit assault that causes harm.

Court documents allege the violent episode was sparked after Mr Swift was visited by his biological brother Raymond Drechsler and mother Lisa Swift on Tuesday in an attempt to retrieve Ms Swift’s car keys.

Prosecutors alleged after knocking on Mr Swift’s door on Billing St, Elizabeth Park, Mr Swift ran out of the home holding a hunting knife.

He allegedly chased his brother, caught him and stabbed him in the stomach, and left the knife there, Ms Swift’s statement to police says.

Mr Swift then allegedly put both hands around his brother’s neck before holding for 30 seconds.

Ms Swift then tried to intervene but Mr Swift pushed her off, causing her to fall and hit her head.

He then allegedly turned to her, her statement says, using her own hands to strike her to the head and pulled chunks of hair from her scalp.

Mr Swift then allegedly put Mr Drechsler in a choke hold, who managed to escape and reach a neighbour’s property.

The homeowners rendered assistance, but Mr Swift was allegedly seen returning home before going back to the neighbour’s home with a galvanised metal pole.

Witnesses allegedly then saw Mr Swift use the pole to pin his brother to a tree he was sitting against by the neck.

Bystanders managed to take the weapon from Mr Swift, who then ran out into the street, telling the driver of a Mitsubishi to “run me over, kill me”, the court documents say.

After the vehicle did not move, Mr Swift allegedly returned to his home, entered the red Ford SUV his family arrived in, reversed into the Mitsubishi’s trailer at speed – almost hitting his brother – before driving into a tree.

He was arrested after police attended moments later.

Mr Drechsler was rushed to hospital with the knife still sticking out of his stomach.

The documents allege the men had a history of “violent altercations” and had been involved in an argument over the phone and on text messages earlier that day.

Magistrate Elizabeth Ferris heard Mr Swift would not make an application for bail, and remanded the matter to move to the Adelaide Magistrates Court in July.

Mr Swift is yet to enter a plea.

Outside court, members of the family declined to comment, telling waiting media to “f**k off” and flipping the bird to cameras.
