A woman was stabbed by a fork during a shocking brawl involving five women in Chinatown in Adelaide’s CBD, a court has heard.

Three women have been remanded in custody over the violent brawl near Adelaide’s Central Market, which ended with two other women rushed to hospital after being stabbed and hit in the head with a bottle.

Andrea Neale, 25, of Elizabeth East, Sharlene Nelson, 28, of Woodville Gardens, and Narell Nelson, 31, of Adelaide, all appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court via video link on Wednesday after being arrested on Tuesday night.

Each has been charged with two counts of aggravated cause harm with intent and two counts of dishonestly deal with property without consent. They are yet to enter any pleas.

Of the accused, Ms Narell Nelson was the only one to apply for bail – which was opposed by prosecutors who submitted to Magistrate Luke Davis she had also allegedly been seen “pulling the hair” of one of her alleged victims.

“The defendant was seen to have punched the victims to the head multiple times using a bottle and on one occasion was seen pulling her hair and punching her head and body several times,” they said. “She was also seen stabbing her with a fork.”

Emergency services were called to Moonta St, between Grote and Gouger streets in Chinatown near the Adelaide Central Market, just before 10pm on Tuesday, after reports of a group of people fighting.

Defence counsel for Ms Nelson told the court their client had a “limited criminal history” and, if remanded in custody, “may not see a trial until 2027”.

“I received some brief instructions this afternoon that self-defence may be available to Ms Nelson in respect of this matter,” they said. “It is a matter – at this point in time – that is contested.”

On Wednesday, Mr Davis refused Ms Nelson’s application for bail and remanded her, and her co-accused, in custody to appear in court in July.

Police said the matter was not random with all involved known to each other.
