Warwick floods: Man rescued on Lyndhurst Lane after driving into floodwaters

A man was forced to call the police himself after a dangerous attempt to drive his hatchback through fast-moving floodwaters on a closed road.

A man has been rescued by emergency services after a dangerous attempt to drive his hatchback through fast-moving floodwaters in Warwick.

Police say the 30-year-old driver tried to cross rapidly rising floodwaters on the Lyndhurst Lane bridge just before 7am on Wednesday, with the man calling officers for assistance when his car engine stopped running.

The man was found and pulled to safety by a patrolling unit before tasked crews from Warwick and Allora could make it to the scene.

He was uninjured and transported to Warwick Hospital as a precaution.

Emergency services were forced to leave behind the white Mazda hatchback until floodwaters recede, with the stranded vehicle attracting public attention and more concerned triple-zero calls.

Police say the vehicle was also uninsured.

A police investigation found the man knowingly drove into the floodwaters despite a ‘road closed’ sign being in place.

He was fined a total of $743 for driving without due care and attention and disobeying a no-entry sign.

The alarming incident comes as huge rainfall totals drive widespread flooding across Warwick and the wider region, with the Condamine River peaking just below 6.5m on Wednesday morning.

More than 60 Southern Downs roads remain closed due to flash flooding as of 5pm on Wednesday.
