Wet and wild night on Sunshine Coast roads as crews respond to multiple crashes

Emergency services are pleading with holiday goers and residents to drive to the conditions after crews attended multiple incidents, including three Bruce Hwy crashes. See the full traffic wrap.

It has been a busy 24 hours for emergency services on the Sunshine Coast as crews attended two vehicle rollovers, three crashes and a structure fire.

There were three crashes on the Bruce Highway, including an early morning three-vehicle collision and a man in his 50s who became trapped in his vehicle at around 8.30am.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services was called to a motorcycle crash south bound on the Bruce Highway at 6pm, after the motorcycle went up in flames. A woman in her 30s received minor injuries and was taken to hospital.

Crews also attended an incident in Burnside after a reported garage fire on Charlton Court at 3.15am.

A spokesman for Queensland Police said all occupants safely evacuated the house.

“The fire is not being treated as suspicious,” he said.

Five teenagers were taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital with minor injuries following a single-vehicle rollover in Mudjimba around 8pm Thursday night.

There was another single-vehicle rollover a the Sunshine Motorway on ramp at Mountain Creek at 8pm Thursday, with a male in his 30s being taken to hospital in a stable condition.

A Queensland Ambulance spokesman said that with the Christmas and New Years holidays underway they were seeing a larger number of road users in popular holiday destinations like the Sunshine Coast.

“Coupled with the current wet weather on the Sunshine Coast, there was a number of crashes across the region,” he said.

“We encourage everyone to allow plenty of time to get around, drive to conditions and ensure they arrive at their destination safely so we all have an enjoyable holiday period.”

The Queensland Police spokesman none of the incidents were being treated as suspicious by police.

Queensland Police is conducting a road safety campaign, Operation Charger.

Acting Chief Superintendent Chris Stream said the operation would target drink and drug driving, as well as speeding.

“We cannot afford to have one more death on Queensland roads,” he said.

The current road toll for Queensland stands at 293 for 2022, which is 18 more than this time last year.
