A young man has been flown to Sunshine Coast University Hospital after falling from a distance at Mount Tibrogargan in the Glass House Mountains.

The 23-year-old man was treated by paramedics, and a LifeFlight rescue helicopter was deployed, after the climber fell around six to eight metres at 9.49am Thursday.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said the climber was experiencing back and hip pain and had suffered a head injury after falling.

Operations Supervisor Rene Grenfell said an advanced care paramedic crew was the first to make it to the injured man.

“It was quite a distance from the car park at Tibrogargan,” she said.

An additional critical care paramedic crew and SES were also involved in the rescue.

“They‘re (the SES) are very good in that area with those sorts of jobs that we go to,” Ms Grenfell said.

Ms Grenfell said the man fell from between six to eight metres from Chicken Rock, the steepest portion of the climb on Mount Tibrogargan, and required extrication so he could be winched onto the rescue helicopter where a flight doctor and critical care paramedic were on-board.

“It is quite sheer and it is a very popular climb,” she said.

“He had quite extensive abrasions to his torso.”

A LifeFlight Rescue spokesperson said the crew flew in the Land Rover Special Mission helicopter.

It was decided a winch operation was the safest retrieval method.

The RACQ LifeFlight Rescue critical care doctor and QAS flight paramedic were first lowered to the mountainside, where they worked with paramedics on the ground to treat, then secure the patient onto a stretcher.

The crew performed three winches, hoisting the doctor, then the stretcher patient, and finally the flight paramedic into the helicopter.

Ms Grenfell urged people to be prepared when venturing out over the holiday season, following a number of rescues over the past week.

“Make sure you tell people when you are going and what time you expect to return,” she said.

“It‘s preferable to travel with a friend as well.”
