Three Sunshine Coast players are propelling their teams towards the pointy end of the league season in style as they pile on the points week in, week out.
Beerwah, Kawana, and Maroochydore have enjoyed fruitful Division 1 campaigns this year, entering the final round of competition inside the top four.
While each boast strong outfits, a number of key players have proven particularly potent on the attacking front.
Beerwah’s Sam Fa’apito and Kawana’s Thomas Sly currently lead the try-scoring figures with 15 tries each.
Meanwhile, Maroochydore, who are fourth in the standings, not only boast the services of a handy tryscorer but stunning kicker in Lachlan Price who leads the overall points scored by a player with 136.
As the Division 1 season enters its final regular season round this weekend, the Daily caught up with ladder leaders Beerwah, second-placed Kawana and fourth-placed Maroochydore to shed some light on their stars.
BEERWAH
Sam Fa’apito (15 tries)
“He’s pure talent and hard work,” coaching staff member Jamie Maliko said.
“He’s got all the skills of a footy player.
“Sam played for New Zealand residents last year or the year before and has come over (chasing debut) in Queensland Cup with Norths.
“He seems to be able to defeat defenders one-on-one with his speed and power.
“(Sam) is a really good person outside of footy and has done well for us.”
KAWANA
Thomas Sly (15 tries)
“He’s a great bloke and full of confidence,” coach Andrew Hinson said.
“He’s probably normally a fullback but we’ve got him playing in the centres.
“(Sly) is really good on his feet and teams find it hard to defend against him because he is so quick off the mark with his good footwork.
“He’s a pretty smart footballer as well so he’s really enjoying his time in the centres and scoring some good tries for us.”
MAROOCHYDORE
Lachlan Price (136 points)
“Lachy is our club captain and one of the senior players there,” coach Dennis Moore said.
“His footy has improved this year and started off in the halves but we’ve moved him into 9 and he’s just one of the generals of the team.
“I think it’s just the maturity in his game and understanding of his role within the group (that’s sparked a big year) and he’s taking a team first attitude and it’s showing with his footy and the team’s footy.
“On his day he does (converts kicks from anywhere).
“It’s a confidence boost for everyone knowing that four points will turn into 6.”
