Ruby-Storm Sarahmay Kayrooz, 12, wakes up from coma, after e-scooter crash, Sunshine Coast

The mother of a bright, sports-obsessed 12-year-old, who suffered life-threatening injuries when she was struck by a car while riding an e-scooter on the Sunshine Coast says her “miracle” daughter is recovering but the ordeal is far from over.

A beautiful and sports obsessed 12-year-old girl has opened her eyes and said her first words in hospital just days after being struck by a P-plater while riding her e-scooter on a footpath to school on the Sunshine Coast.

Ruby-Storm Sarahmay Kayrooz was rushed to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital after suffering two collapsed lungs, possible brain damage early Wednesday, August 21.

Bystanders were credited with helping save Ruby’s life after she was hit and pinned under the car driven by a 21-year-old Maroochydore woman on her green P-plates on Main Road.

Queensland Police have not made any arrests or laid charges but are still investigating.

Ruby’s mother, Rebecca Cronan, 46, of Bli Bli, said it was a miracle she survived.

“Ruby is awake … this is unbelievable. She is going to for sure have a full recovery,” Ms Cronan said.

“No one can believe this. She is breathing all my herself.

“The MRI scan has shown no broken bones not even one … she has her breathing tubes out of her lungs.

“She has tubes out of her mouth, has a tube through her nose into her stomach for draining and also a catheter in.

“She is one of the toughest people I know. She is a miracle.

“She is still being brought down off the drugs keeping her from pain but it wouldn’t surprise me if she cartwheels out of here.

“She is amazing. This is still such a shock.”

Ruby opened her eyes about 7.30pm Friday evening, coming out of an induced coma.

“She’s still in and out of consciousness and we don’t know about the possibility of brain damage yet,” Ms Cronan said.

“The first thing she said was ask if she was dead. She didn’t know where she was.

“She was excited to see me and her dad but still doesn’t really remember what happened. She’s not really with it and is more whispering than talking. She can’t have a proper conversation.

“She’s also struggling with her eyesight saying it’s a bit blurry but she’s coming off heavy pain medication.”

Her mother said although this was a miracle, they still had a long road to recovery.

“It’s going to be a couple of months in the hospital,” she said.

“We’re over the moon and just can’t believe it.

“But it’s still early stages. We’re hopeful for a full recovery but you never know.”

Ruby’s parents said they wanted to thank all emergency services for their help, the hospital staff, the bystanders on scene who helped, and those from her school and sports clubs who had reached out and offered their support.

Ruby loves skateboarding, roller skating, surfing and is a gymnast. She also plays netball for her school.
