A picture has emerged online of a hate symbol being paraded in front of a Sunshine Coast primary school just weeks after multiple people were charged over a neo-nazi march in Brisbane.

The image portrays a woman, wearing a blue shirt with a swastika and ‘88’ blazed across the back, walking on the footpath on August 22.

The photo was taken by Chancellor Park Primary School about 3.30pm last Thursday.

Primary students finish school at 3pm.

The photo was posted in a Sunshine Coast Facebook group with the caption “photo speaks for itself” by an anonymous member.

The figure 88 is significant in the neo-nazi and white supremacy movement and is the numerical code for ‘Heil Hitler’.

A Queensland Police spokeswoman said it is encouraged to report any incidents involving offensive imagery and to contact police if anyone feels threatened or fearful.

“Everyone in Queensland has a right to feel safe, to not feel threatened or victimised,” she said.

She said police continue to monitor individuals and groups who potentially pose a threat to Queenslanders and all threats against cultural or religious communities are “treated with utmost seriousness”.

Police work closely with other state and federal law enforcement and intelligence agencies to investigate and respond to “potential instances of extremism of any kind”, the spokeswoman said.

Displaying nazi symbolism or conducting the salute and other gestures became a criminal offence in December 2023 as a counter-terrorism legislation amendment.

The offence has a maximum penalty of six months’ imprisonment.

This comes just weeks after a man was arrested and infringement notices were issued following a neo-nazi parade in the Brisbane CBD.
