A young man who got into a violent altercation with a corrections officer in a Queensland jail has learnt his fate in court.
Jaydon Lee George, 23, of Caloundra, pleaded guilty to charges of wilful damage, serious assault, threatening violence, possession of firearms, and obstructing an officer after a violent altercation on May 2, 2024.
Police prosecutors told the court George faced the corrective officer in a “defensive position” with clenched fists before he lunged at the victim with both hands while threatening him.
The court heard the victim was trying to de-escalate the situation at the time.
Magistrate Bevan Hughes told George the corrective officer was “just doing their job”, and that it was unacceptable to get violent with an officer.
Previously, George had sent a text to another person saying “tell (victim’s name) if he wants to f*** around, I’ll kick the door in and shoot anyone”.
He then sent a picture of a shortened firearm.
Prosecutors said the victim, who was unrelated to the corrections officer, immediately felt scared for their safety and reported the incident to police.
Additionally, George was charged for willful damage as he had smashed a windscreen of a car.
George was already in custody at the time of the hearing and joined the courtroom via video link.
Magistrate Hughes convicted him on all charges, and sentenced him to a further two months in jail for wilful damage, and a further 12 months in jail for the other charges.
He remains eligible for parole on December 1, 2024.
