Police injured in Airbnb party arrests

A young woman has faced court after assaulting four police officers who had been called to an “out of control” party at an Airbnb property where a music video was being filmed.

Buderim teenager Tiana Rorisang Jen, 19, pleaded guilty in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court to four counts of serious assault on police and two counts of obstructing police.

The court heard police were called to break up an “out of control” party at an Airbnb at a Wishart address in Brisbane on October 31, 2021.

Jen, an apprentice hairdresser, was part of the film shoot as a backup dancer.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable David Hoffmann said four officers had attended and arrested a man at the property when Jen assaulted police.

Constable Hoffmann told the court the teenager threw a bottle at the officers which missed them but splashed a “clear” liquid on them.

He said Jen also pushed a female officer into a vehicle and applied force to the woman’s head and neck.

None of the officers sustained injuries of any kind.

Defence lawyer Belinda Robinson argued that while Jen was intoxicated, her contact with the officers was very brief.

Ms Robinson told the court that it was a plastic Mount Franklin water bottle that her client threw at police and that the liquid inside it was water.

Constable Hoffmann did not dispute this but said there was no proof as to what was in the bottle.

Ms Robinson tabled character references which described Jen as a “good, kind” human and said this was her first offence.

Magistrate Matthew McLaughlin said Jen’s charges were serious assault because police were splashed with the liquid that could have been a dangerous substance like “acid, bleach or urine”.

“The courts have to treat this seriously, a large party full of drunken people and a mob outside, it’s scary for police,” Magistrate McLaughlin told the court.

“It’s lucky that no one did get hurt. But you could have been the spark that got the crowd going.

“It’s terrible behaviour.”

Jen was placed on 12-months’ probation and agreed to 100 hours of community service.

No conviction was recorded.
