A 30-year-old construction labourer has received a jail sentence after he drunkenly fled to his mum’s place after being involved in a car crash.

Police were called to Anne Street, Kenilworth about 6pm on Thursday, September 16 after Thomas William Dillon’s car clipped a vehicle.

Dillon then fled the scene.

The Maroochydore Magistrates Court heard the 30-year-old Cooloola man had been drinking at the Kenilworth Hotel beforehand.

Police prosecutor Lee Allen said Dillon was found at his mum’s place at 8.20pm where he refused to undergo a breath test.

The court heard Dillon was “unsteady” on his feet and had to be assisted by police to their vehicle.

Senior constable Allen said he again failed to provide a sample of his breath at the Maroochydore Police Station where he was charged.

Defence lawyer Bree-Anna Bowtell said Dillon had “freaked out” after the crash and ran to his mum’s place where he had several more drinks.

Ms Bowtell said in his state Dillon didn’t think he had to provide a sample of his breath and had already admitted to police about the crash.

Dillon pleaded guilty to drink driving and failing to provide a sample of breath and was sentenced to three months’ jail, suspended for nine months.

He was also fined $1500 and disqualified from driving for two years.

Convictions were recorded.
