Sunshine Coast police hunt starts after Beerwah servo car theft attempt

A brave elderly woman proved she was no easy target when a man attempted to steal her car while she was filling up at a hinterland service station.

A 79-year-old woman has struggled with a man who tried to steal her car as she went to fill up the tank at the Shell service station in Beerwah.

A 79-year-old woman has taken on a man who tried to steal her car at a Sunshine Coast hinterland petrol station.

Sunshine Coast Criminal Investigation Branch officer-in-charge Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Mansfield said the woman got out of her car at the Shell service station on Simpson St in Beerwah, locked the car and walked to the bowser about 1.45pm yesterday, August 8.

“The male person has approached them and tried to get their car keys off them initially, there was a struggle over the car keys and then the victim escaped them,” he said.

The man was then seen with another woman leaving the station and they were picked up by another car.

Police also found a dumped stolen Land Rover in Beerwah they believed was connected to the pair who fled.

An investigation continues and officers were still hunting for the pair this morning, August 9.

The detective said police believed the pair was in their 20s and the man was fair-skinned with shoulder-length hair.

Anyone who saw the incident or has footage of it should come forward.

This latest incident follows the alleged holdup by knifepoint of a Maroochydore bottle shop on July 26.

A 14-year-old boy was charged with armed robbery.
