Sunshine Coast officers have brought in the help of the Australian Federal Police to contact Interpol to identify the body of a man found in the Maroochy River last year.

The man’s body was found by a member of the public about 8.15am on Thursday, November 30, near Bradman Ave and the Sunshine Motorway overpass bridge called the Talep Bridge in Maroochydore.

The last confirmed sighting of the man was at Maroochydore Bunnings about 5.30pm on November 27, where he was seen on CCTV carrying a blue backpack.

Police believe the footage was captured on the day he passed away.

Sunshine Coast police are asking for public assistance to identify the man as they work to obtain DNA testing and attempt to match the internal surgical nails in the man’s right knee with a hospital.

A police press release stated DNA Ancestry testing will reveal the man’s lineal descent to assist in identifying possible relatives or his place of origin.

Detectives also received assistance from the AFP to initiate inquiries through the global Interpol network.

If necessary, the AFP will submit an Interpol Black Notice which would circulate to 196 countries to allow checks on international missing person databases.

Officer in Charge Sunshine Coast District Criminal Investigation Branch Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Mansfield said no reported missing persons in Queensland match the man’s identity.

“We know someone knows this man – a family member, a friend, a boss or colleague,” he said.

“Detectives have deemed the death not suspicious however we continue to appeal for public assistance to help identify him so we can inform his family”

Senior Sergeant Mansfield said their main focus is to return the unidentified man to those who knew and loved him.

“We’re not ruling anything out as he might be a local, or from interstate or overseas,” he said.

Police urge any who recognises the man or has information to assist in identification to contact police via Policelink or Crime Stoppers.
