Attack leaves Sunshine Coast high school in lockdown, student in hospital HT

A student has detailed a terrifying incident at a Sunshine Coast high school that left a student in hospital and the school in lockdown.

A girl has been charged following an alleged attack at a Sunshine Coast high school, which went into lockdown at 9.30am for about an hour on Tuesday, October 3.

Police alleged a 12-year-old girl was found by officers with a knife and had caused damage to a wall.

A 12-year-old boy sustained a non-life-threatening cut to his abdomen and was transported to Sunshine Coast University Hospital for treatment.

It will be alleged two other students were threatened, but not physically injured.

The 12-year-old girl was taken into custody and was denied police bail.

She was charged with one count each of wounding, going armed so as to cause fear, possession of a knife in a public place, two counts of common assault and three counts of wilful damage.

She is expected to appear in the Maroochydore Children’s Court Wednesday, October 4.

A student, who cannot be named, said teachers locked the doors to the classroom and turned off the lights before the student hid under a desk during the incident.

The student’s mum has described the incident as upsetting.

She said an email “would have been nice” to tell parents what had happened.

“Just to let us know not to be worried,” she said.

“Of course we’re going to be worried, and I didn’t know what to do.”

The mum’s daughter emailed her to ask her to come and pick her up.

A Department of Education spokesperson said they were aware of the incident and ongoing counselling and support was available for students and staff.

“Any situation that threatens the safety and wellbeing of students or others in the school community is treated extremely seriously, and dealt with as a matter of priority which may include lockdowns,” they said.
