A Newtown grandmother has said she felt “embarrassed” after she was videoed attacking another woman in a park in front of children.

Video footage from onlookers captured the moment Cherylee Ann Garrett, 56, attacked another woman in a Caloundra West park on September 2, Caloundra Magistrates Court heard.

Police prosecutor Stephen Potter said an argument had been sparked between Garrett and the victim about another matter when it turned physical.

Garrett then stepped forward and rained down blows on the woman’s head with video footage recording the three strikes, with the victim suffering minor injuries.

A complaint was made to police after the assault and Garrett was spoken to by police but declined to be interviewed, but said to officers she was “embarrassed”.

Duty solicitor Donna Hanslow-Hastie said she was instructed the incident stemmed from another matter which led to the assault but told the court this was out of character for the grandmother.

Magistrate Catherine Benson said it was inappropriate behaviour in front of children but had no evidence of injuries to take into account from the victim.

Garrett pleaded guilty to common assault and was given a six-month good behaviour bond.

No conviction was recorded.
