A Dulong tradie said he was “going to jail” after he savagely punched his former partner in the face repeatedly after she approached him with a knife.

Maroochydore District Court heard on Thursday how Ryan David Trethewy, 46, sent abusive texts to his former partner while at their Bli Bli home on September 3, 2021.

Crown prosecutor Michael Andronicus said Trethewy locked himself in his room prior to the assault due to there being animosity between him and his former partner.

Mr Andronicus said in response the victim used a knife to pick the lock of the 46-year-old’s bedroom door before she approached him while she held the weapon.

The court heard Trethewy restrained the woman in self defence however he repeatedly punched her in the face which resulted in bruising.

The Dulong man contacted a friend shortly afterwards and said “this is real now, I’m going to jail”.

Trethewy was charged with multiple offences including three counts of choking, two of common assault and other assault charges.

The prosecution however withdrew multiple charges in court on Thursday due to the victim giving evidence at a prerecording hearing in early 2024 before a potential trial.

Trethewy instead pleaded guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm where Mr Andronicus said the factual basis of the charge changed from what was originally alleged.

Defence barrister Simon Lewis said there was an aspect of provocation from the victim after the seasoned carpenter initially locked himself in his room.

Mr Lewis said it was accepted Trethewy lost his temper while disarming her and “went too far afterwards”.

The Dulong man suffered a cut under his eye during the struggle for the knife.

The barrister said Trethewy had a supportive family and was in another relationship which was the “first real healthy relationship” he’s had.

Judge Glen Cash accepted the Dulong man was entitled to restrain the woman when she came into Trethewy’s room with a knife but he wasn’t entitled to continue and punch her in the face.

Trethewy was sentenced to three months’ jail, suspended immediately for 12 months.
