A Sunshine Coast boilermaker has been refused bail for alleged assaults on his elderly neighbour and another on a newsagency boss.

Police allege Mason William Stoakes showed “uncontrolled aggression” towards his 82-year-old neighbour following an argument about fires on their property lines in Woombye.

Bail objection documents before Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Thursday revealed the allegedly disturbing confrontation between the pair on June 11.

Court documents state the 24-year-old allegedly threw a large wooden stake “like a spear” in his elderly neighbour’s direction after she tried to talk to him about large fires burning near their boundary fence.

The woman suspected Stoakes turned her water off at the property.

Police further allege Stoakes threatened to kill the woman and her neighbour who came to assist.

A month earlier on May 18, police allege Stoakes damaged a news agency before attacking its owner and stealing his jacket at Toowoomba City before he fled in a vehicle.

Bail documents state Stoakes was in Toowoomba at the time to scatter his father’s ashes, who the court heard died in April.

Court documents state Stoakes’ relatives believe he was abusing meth which was “elevating” his behaviour.

Bail documents state the Woombye tradie even allegedly threatened his elderly neighbour’s son to drop a trespass charge against him.

“If you do not drop the charges, you will see the end of a shotgun,” Stoakes allegedly said.

The 24-year-old faced court on Thursday charged with 13 offences including one count of serious assault, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and two of threatening violence.

Defence lawyer Cherisse Breese said her client was struggling with his mental health and hoped to seek support.

Ms Breese said Stoakes was looking after his sick dad this year until he died in April. The court heard the 24-year-old was struggling from grief ever since.

The duty lawyer pushed for his release on bail and said the boilermaker could live in the Moreton Bay region and could be employed in woodwork with his partner’s father.

Magistrate Rod Madsen refused Stoakes’ bail and adjourned his matter to July 17.
