A Kings Beach chef on drugs and alcohol was goading police officers to shoot him during a tense suburban standoff, a court has heard.

Bodycam footage was played to Caloundra Magistrates Court on August 11, 2022 where Amar-Jyot Singh Gujral faced charges of serious assault police while armed.

The court heard the 30-year-old brewery worker had taken meth, prescribed medication and alcohol on December 9, 2021 before he was seen shirtless about 9.30pm on a Kings Beach street.

In the video Gujral could be seen moving around the street agitated, yelling and waving a knife around while officers tried to calm him down.

“Shoot me, I'm not putting the knife down, f---ing shoot me you weak little dog,” Gujral said.

“I’m going to come at you with a knife c--- … do you want to get stabbed?”

An officer can be heard on the video saying “come on mate” and “let’s talk about it”.

“Back up, back up mate,” another officer said on the video.

An officer was able to taser Gujral from behind and police took the 30-year-old into custody after a struggle.

Police prosecutor Amanda Brewer said officers showed incredible restraint when there was a clear threat to life.

Sergeant Brewer said in the video Gujral could be seen holding the bladed weapon above his head making a forward motion towards police.

“Please mate, please mate it doesn’t have to go down like this,” Sergeant Brewer said as she quoted one of the officers.

“All the officers in my submission took a risk in allowing the defendant to be so close in an effort to protect his life.”

Barrister Clem van der Weegen said Gujral was suffering from severe mental health problems that night after a relationship breakdown and the loss of one of his friends.

Mr van der Weegen said the brewery worker did not lunge at police and only made small steps towards officers and had since written an apology to police.

Magistrate Catherine Benson agreed and said Gujral did not rush them and accepted his remorse.

Gujral pleaded guilty to three counts of serious assault police, contravene a police requirement and obstructing an officer and was sentenced to 18 months’ jail.

He was given immediate parole, with convictions recorded.
