Noosa MP says rego slug is twice the CPI

Families battling to pay the household budget are being slugged twice the rate of inflation by the State Government, Noosa MP Glen Elmes says.

NOOSA families battling to pay the household budget are being slugged twice the rate of inflation by the State Government, according to local MP Glen Elmes.

The State Member for Noosa said the recent release of official inflation figures confirmed the worst possible scenario for local car owners.

"For the second year running this Labor government has increased family car rego costs by 3.5% - more than twice the inflation rate,” Mr Elmes said.

"Car registration for a four-cylinder vehicle now costs more than $300 per year courtesy of the increase in state taxes under this government.

"Over and over again I come across the misconception that Noosa is a rich enclave where families are somehow immune to spiralling and crippling household costs.”

Mr Elmes said the majority of residents in his electorate were either on a pension; earned an average wage or were employed casually with a take home pay dependent upon seasonal tourism.

"The LNP froze car registration costs for the three years when we were in government and we've committed that any future rises are kept in line with CPI - not double the inflation rate like we've seen under Labor,” Mr Elmes said.

The RACQ earlier this year called on the government to freeze the price of rego.

"Queensland is still the most expensive state in the country to run a car, so this is just adding to the cost burden for Queenslanders,” an RACQ spokeswoman said.

Tranpsort Minister Mark Bailey at the time blamed the increases on an indexation policy introduced by the former Newman Government.
