A high profile builder who made headlines when he failed to demolish his rooftop tennis court after it was knocked back by council has vowed to fight drug trafficking charges after police raided his Minyama Island mansion.

Wayne Geoffrey Dwyer was the previous director of Dwyer Quality Homes and had his matter mentioned in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on November 24, 2022.

Mr Dwyer’s Minyama Island property was searched by the Sunshine Coast Tactical Crime Squad on November 3, 2022.

Inside the large home officers found an unanalysed 13g of methamphetamine, an amount of cash, an electronic device, scales, clip seal bags and pipes.

Police will allege electronic evidence suggested Mr Dwyer had engaged in the trafficking of methamphetamine between August 1, 2022, and November 3, 2022.

Mr Dwyer was represented by Dominic Brunello who asked for his client’s appearance to be excused as he had work commitments.

The Sunshine Coast Daily spoke to Mr Dwyer about the allegations and he confirmed he would be fighting the charges.

“Certainly we will be fighting it because they’re false charges ... it’s ridiculous,” Mr Dwyer said.

“We will be fighting those charges for sure, it will all be heard next year.”

Court documents state Mr Dwyer was employed full-time as the owner and manager of a building company and Australian Securities and Investments Commission documents listed Mr Dwyer as a former director of Dwyer Homes Pty Ltd and a previous shareholder.

According to Commission documents, Mr Dwyer was also the director of Octoclay Pty Ltd, which was now under external administration.

In an unrelated matter, Mr Dwyer raised eyebrows when he entered into a legal battle with the Sunshine Coast Council after he built a tennis court on the rooftop of his waterfront home worth an estimated $5m or more.

The builder was found in contempt of an enforcement order by Judge Glen Cash after he had failed to remove the tennis court fencing, lighting fixtures, a lift, and an enclosed structure.

Judge Cash fined Mr Dwyer $5000 and told him to pay legal costs of the proceedings after Sunshine Coast Regional Council said the Minyama property owner “did not have permission” to build the tennis court.

As a result of the recent drug operation, Mr Dwyer faces one count of trafficking methamphetamine, one count of possessing methamphetamine, one count of possessing property suspected if being the proceeds of an offence under the drugs misuse act, one count of possessing property suspected of having been acquired for the purpose of committing a drug offence, one count of possessing property suspected of having been used in the commission of an of a drug offence and one count of possessing anything used in the commission of a crim.

The 60-year-old who was born in Geelong is due to appear again for the drugs charges on January 27, 2023.
