A group of more than 100 is expected to gather at a Sunshine Coast park to remember a popular teen and hear more about suicide prevention and mental health awareness.

The loved ones of 19-year-old Sorawit ‘JJ’ Nganprateepkul have organised a gathering at which friends of the dead teen will hear from a suicide prevention expert before listening to friends talk about JJ’s life.

JJ died in an incident at a major Sunshine Coast road on February 16.

He lived with the Moloney family in the two years before he died and mum, Cate Moloney, is organising the public memorial with JJ’s wide circle of friends in mind.

“It’s to help with awareness of mental health issues and to support anyone else who might be struggling, to support their friends,” Ms Moloney said.

“And to get there and talk about it all, and let them talk about it too.

“It gives them the opportunity to talk about JJ and what happened.”

She said the memorial would start about 4pm with a talk by a mental health and suicide prevention expert before the gathering would hear friends talk about the 19-year-old.

The popular Tik Tok content creator had more than 2300 followers and the majority of his videos had amassed more than 30,000 views.

To be held at the swimming pool end of the Cotton Tree Park in Cotton Tree, the event will finish with a barbecue and the lighting of lanterns to float on the nearby Maroochy River.

The event starts at 4pm on March 24 and the family, in conjunction with the Uce Movement Suicide and Mental Health Awareness Prevention group, is raising money via GoFundMe for the memorial.

Ms Moloney said any leftover funds would be donated to Sunshine Coast suicide prevention groups.
