Lightning re-sign powerful pair
“Mahalia is such an exciting player to watch and she is impressive and creative in attack but can also hold her own defensively,” Byrne said.
“Moreover, I believe she will fit in really well with the group and the wider Lightning environment and she provides another versatile, explosive option through our midcourt.”
Cassidy has made a name wearing the centre bib, but is also comfortable at wing attack.
The 25-year-old ranked fourth in the league for goal assists in 2020 and led Firebirds for pick-ups.
“When A new opportunity and challenge presented itself at Lightning, I was incredibly excited to sign on with the Club ahead of 2021,” Cassidy said.
“Lightning is a consistently competitive side in the Super Netball league and I’m eager to do whatever I can to contribute to the team, both on and off court.”
Lightning’s squad of 10 has officially been confirmed with shooters Steph Wood, Cara Koenen and Peace Proscovia, midcourters Laura Scherian, Maddy McAuliffe, Mahalia Cassidy and Ashlee Unie.
In defence the club has secured Karla Pretorius, Phumza Maweni and Kate Shimmin, rounding out the 10.
Silver Fern great and captain Laura Langman called time on her career while Annika Lee-Jones announced she would depart the club at the end of the season.
Jacqui Russell has also announced she would retire.
