A popular campground in a small Sunshine Coast town has revealed plans to expand to include more than 180 campsites, promising to boost local tourism and “future proof” the area.
The Kenilworth Showgrounds submitted plans for the site at 7 Maleny Kenilworth Rd to the Sunshine Coast Council last week, outlining their intention to “enhance the character” of the town with a campground upgrade.
The planning report submitted to the council stated the campground would work to upgrade the site in order to preserve the surrounding natural assets, if the development were to be approved.
The extension to the site would accommodate a total of 181 campsites.
“By approving the tourist park, the site will be future proofed from further development ensuring the sites natural assets are retained,” the report stated.
The report also stated the expansion of the campground would help boost the town’s tourism numbers.
“Expansion of the tourist park will improve the economic viability of local producers/businesses by providing increased foot traffic to market stalls and nearby shops,” the report stated.
“Increasing the available accommodation on site will provide greater opportunities for visitors to be exposed to/engage in the local culture of the Kenilworth area.”
A significant increase in landscaping, an adventure play park and revegetating the site’s waterway to reach a height of 10m are also included in the report to the council.
“Currently the site is predominantly covered by open field grass area with limited landscaping. The proposed development will facilitate a significant increase in landscaped areas utilising a variety of native flora species,” the report stated.
“To revitalise the use of the currently under-utilised grassy area west of the waterway and provide a space for people to appreciate the natural environment, an area of adventure nature play is proposed.”
The application comes after the showgrounds were issued with a show cause notice by the Sunshine Coast Council in 2022 for allegedly operating a commercial caravan park without the appropriate approval.
