Joshua Shaw allegedly caused crash that injured Aileen and Arthur Kelly

The identity of the man allegedly responsible for a horror head-on collision that almost killed two former teachers has been revealed in court.

Former Rockhampton Grammar School teachers Arthur and Aileen Kelly were both seriously injured in a crash at Peregian Springs.

A Pelican Waters dad is set to face the District Court for allegedly causing the crash that left two elderly ex-teachers with life-threatening injuries.

Joshua Paul William Shaw, 27, represented himself in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on October 21 where his charge of dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm was handed up to the District Court.

Mr Shaw is yet to enter a plea to the charge that arose from a head-on crash at Peregian Springs on March 15, 2022.

Police allege Shaw was driving his Mazda 3 northbound along Emu Mountain Arterial Rd when he collided with a vehicle coming in the opposite direction that then collided with a third vehicle.

Magistrate Matthew McLaughlin said an officer on the scene had a conversation with Mr Shaw that was caught on body worn camera footage.

Mr Shaw allegedly stated he had briefly veered onto the opposite lane and “heard a bang” but couldn’t remember the rest of what occurred.

Magistrate McLaughlin told the court that statements from doctors had been prepared regarding the injuries suffered by Arthur and Aileen Kelly who were both in their 70s.

Mr Kelly had suffered a ruptured aorta, one of the major blood vessels in the heart.

The court heard he “would’ve died” if the condition hadn’t been treated and doctors had called him a “miracle man”.

Mrs Kelly suffered a punctured lung that if left untreated would endanger life or cause a permanent injury.

As reported by the Rockhampton Bulletin, Mr and Mrs Kelly were both were maths teachers and Mr Kelly was also the deputy headmaster at the Rockhampton Grammar School, where they worked for 36 years.

A GoFundMe started for the couple has now raised over $12,000 to support their long road of recovery.
