Motorists heading south from the Sunshine Coast had more than enough congestion to contend with when a single vehicle crash was reported on the Bruce Highway.

A Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman said they had been called out to a reported single vehicle crash on the Bruce Highway near Landsborough but when the crew arrived on scene they found out the motorist had just run out of fuel.

“Someone has driven past and seen him on the side of the road and called us thinking it was a crash,” she said.

“But when we arrived there he had just run out of petrol so we weren’t required.”

But the incident, just near exit 188, still caused headaches for those travelling at the end of the long weekend.

A Queensland Police spokeswoman said that officers had to be called in to help manage traffic control around the broken down vehicle.

“As it is Easter Monday I‘m sure it might create some traffic headaches in the area,” she said.

The Easter Monday traffic had already been building during the day, with significant delays experienced across major arterials in South East Queensland.

Congestion was building north of Brisbane on the Bruce Highway between Beerburrum and North Lakes, with southbound delays of more than half an hour, according to Queensland Traffic.

Travel time from Maroochydore to Kallangur was 1hr 25min, nearly twice the usual.
