Sunshine Coast Airport is set to get a revamped terminal with more food and drink options and upgrades to check-in processes, with more than 1000 people adding their thoughts in a community survey.

The existing terminal was completed in 1997, when what was originally called the Maroochy Aerodrome was renamed to Sunshine Coast Airport.

According to the community survey launched by the airport, 50 per cent of the design of the terminal has been completed and they are seeking feedback from the community to guide the final 50 per cent of the project.

Corporate communications general manager Kylie Ezzy said there had been an amazing community response with more than 1000 people filling out the survey.

“The key points of note are more seating options, healthy local food options – including sit down meals – and family friendly amenities and equipment,” she said.

On the Sunshine Coast Airport Facebook site, where they announced the initiative, many said it was a long overdue renovation.

“Remove all the filthy carpets and chairs covered in material,” said one user.

“On my most recent trip to meet family all the chairs in arrival were stained and the carpet was disgusting.”

“The place is a dump and embarrassing, build a big modern terminal now!” said another.

Some were a little more measured in their feedback.

“Absolutely fantastic idea,” said one user.

In the survey participants are asked why they usually chose to travel, how many times they’ve used the airport in the last two years, how they travel there and what facilities are important to them.

It also asks what participants usually like to do at the airport and what items they would likely purchase.

Ms Ezzy the terminal revamp would double the terminal’s size to approximately 14,000 sqm.

“The expansion will improve the terminal’s interiors through the use of natural light, greenery and open spaces,” she said.

“The passenger and visitor experience will be greatly enhanced through additional amenities and seating, upgrades to check-in technology, a new passenger screening point, expanded baggage handling systems and landside transport facilities.

“Food and beverage options will be expanded and improved, showcasing the very best local produce and products.”

Ms Ezzy said the construction process would be done in three stages to minimise disruptions and that there would be no changes to flight services.

“Enabling works will commence later this year, with the first stage of construction scheduled to commence in early 2024,” she said.

“The terminal expansion is due for completion in early 2027.”

Sunshine Coast Airport’s community survey is open until midnight Sunday, April 16.
