Dentist Liam James Maundrell in Maroochydore court for drink driving

A Coolum Beach dentist’s decision to drive a short distance to McDonald’s has cost him in court as he was fined $1400 for driving drunk.

Liam James Laurence C Maundrell, 22, was also disqualified for six months after pleading guilty to driving under the influence in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on June 8, 2022.

Police prosecutor Lee Allen said Maundrell was driving his red Mazda 3 hatchback when he was pulled over by police on May 22, 2022.

He provided a positive breath test and was taken back to the Maroochydore Station where he blew a reading of 0.173.

Defence solicitor Chelsea Emery said her client was one of four children who were all high achievers.

Court documents revealed Maundrell’s occupation was a dentist and that he had graduated from James Cook University.

Ms Emery said her client had been out drinking and did take a taxi home but then decided to drive to McDonald’s with his housemate at 12.50am.

“His mother is here supporting him today and she is just as nervous as he is,” Ms Emery told the court.

“He’s a hard worker … his mother has indicated he has never really stepped out of line ever.”

Ms Emery said Maundrell did not take a gap year after finishing school and went straight to university.

Magistrate Rod Madsen said the fact Maundrell only drove a short distance didn’t help his case.

“I saw a fellow up in Noosa who drove a short distance and broke his neck,” Mr Madsen said.

“Your background is exemplary … this is out of character for you.”

Mr Madsen did not record a conviction against Maundrell.
