Darni Nyburg loses leg, remains critical in hospital, following 12 vehicle Bruce Highway crash

A motorcyclist caught up in a horror 12-vehicle pileup on the Bruce Highway is fighting for life after losing her leg in the shocking crash that shut the road for hours.

A beloved Sunshine Coast mother and “bad ass biker babe” known affectionately as “captain cuddles” is fighting for her life in hospital after losing her leg in a horrific 12-vehicle crash which shut down parts of the Bruce Highway last week.

Darni Nyburg, in her 50s, was riding her motorcycle northbound on Friday, June 21, when a car allegedly hit her from behind.

According to police she then lost control from the impact and crashed into cars ahead of her and went over the guard rail.

Both lanes of the highway at the southern end of the Sunshine Coast were closed with commuters facing hours of delays.

An RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter landed on a closed stretch of highway and flew Ms Nyburg to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman at the time said she had life threatening chest and leg injuries.

Ms Nyburg was put in an induced coma on Friday and underwent a seven hour life saving surgery.

Since then two GoFundMe campaigns have been launched for the Sunshine Coast 59 Motorcycle Club road captain.

The Sunshine Coast-based RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter crew has flown after a car collided with the back of her motorcycle on the Bruce Highway, causing her to lose control and crash.

“All around bloody awesome daughter, sister, Mum, Aunty, fabulous friend, mate, bad ass biker babe and rocker, was on the way to work on her beloved Trumpy when she was struck by a motor vehicle on the Bruce Highway,” Amanda Dagger said on one of the pages.

“Darni received multiple extensive life-threatening injuries including losing a leg, and was taken to hospital by LifeFlight chopper where she is in a medically induced coma.

“We know Darni is a fighter and an outstanding human with the biggest heart, wicked sense of humour and giver of the best hugs.

“It's absolutely heartbreaking for this to have happened to her.

“Let’s help out with some financial support (every little bit helps) for her and her family to take some pressure off and cover the unexpected immediate expenses like travel and hospital parking.”

Tia Buchanan also launched a fundraiser for Ms Nyburg following the devastating crash.

“I am raising funds for my best friend’s mother who was critically injured in the pile up on the June 21 on the Bruce Highway Sunshine Coast while riding her motorbike. Her condition remains extremely critical as she undergoes multiple surgeries to save her life, however she will have permanent injuries she will never recover from,” she wrote.

“As you can imagine her family don’t want to leave her side.

“I am hoping to raise money to help fund travel and cost of living to help alleviate the burden of rent and any other costs while they sit by her side and pray she makes it through.

Brad Nyburg has also shared the fundraiser on social media for his mother.

“As some may already know my Mum was apart of the horrific multi vehicle accident on the Bruce Highway on Friday June 21. While riding her motorbike to work she was struck by a vehicle at high speeds and is in the ICU at RBWH with multiple extensive life changing injuries,” he said.

“This fundraiser is to help support our family with the costs of transportation, parking, legal fees, bills and so we can all be by her side through this traumatic incident.

“Even if you can’t help financially just sending your thoughts and prays for her would mean a great deal.”
