Police have charged several people with weapons, drugs and theft offences following a thorough street check as part of the reinforcement of Jack’s Law.

Operation Sunshine Safety saw police on the streets of Nambour on July 22 to use handheld scanners to wand or detect illegal weapons in public places, as a continued effort to focus on Jack’s Law

During the operation, Nambour police, the Sunshine Coast Child Protection Investigation Unit, Sunshine Coast Tactical Crime Squad, and Railway Squad conducted 34 street checks and 41 wandings.

The operation resulted in four people being charged.

Police allege a 54-year-old Nambour man was found with a knife at a Nambour public transport station.

He was charged with possessing a knife in a public place and is due to appear in Nambour Magistrates Court on August 18.

A 16-year-old Morayfield boy was also allegedly found with a knife at a station and has been charged with possessing a knife in public, fare evasion and stealing.

It is expected he will appear in Caboolture Childrens Court on August 20.

A30-year-old Maroochydore man was also found with cannabis at a station and he is due to appear in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on August 22 charged with possessing drugs.

Finally, a 43-year-old Nambour man was street checked by police and charged with stealing items from a Howard St business on April 25.

He is scheduled to appear in Nambour Magistrates Court on August 4.

Operation Sunshine Safety is ongoing and will include high visibility patrols in the Nambour CBD and public transport hubs to ensure community safety.

Sunshine Coast District Officer Superintendent Craig Hawkins said it was important the community was not only safe, but also felt safe.

“Operation Sunshine Safety is designed to enhance community safety through high visibility activities including foot patrols, street checks, wanding, and community engagement, particularly in relation to public transport,” Superintendent Hawkins said.

“These proactive patrols are in addition to wanding operations across the Sunshine Coast under Operation Marshall, and in addition to the day-to-day work of local frontline police.”
